Asparuj
Significado y origen de Asparuj
Asparuh is a masculine given name that originates in the present-day central Iranian region, attested in ancient Georgia and early medieval Bulgaria (Hellenized as Asparoukis).
The name was apparently widespread in the Caucasus and Central Asian region where the Proto-Bulgarians originated. It is composed of the first element aspa (horse); the second element may be derived from the root rauk (brightness), meaning "he who has magnificent horses".
Among the bearers of this name are:
- Asparuh of Iberia (Western Georgia)/ Viceroy of Armazi (locality) in Iberia (Georgia), contemporary of the Roman Emperor Publius Aelius Hadrianus (117–138 AD)
- Asparuh of Bulgaria, supreme Khan of the Proto-Bulgarians and founder of the medieval Bulgarian state. He reigned in Pliska (Northeastern Bulgaria) in 670 – 700 AD and is famous for his decisive victory over the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IV Pogonatos in 680. After the victory of the Battle of Ongal (680) modern Bulgaria was established. He died in 700 in battle against the Khazars.
